If the pilot holds steady but the main burner never lights, attention moves to the combination gas control valve and its thermostat probe. That assembly is the priciest single part on a residential tank, and it is the one component where the age of the heater changes the recommendation outright.

Soot on the burner, a lazy yellow flame, or flame rolling forward out of the compartment all say the appliance is short of combustion air. Working an electric tank in order

Zero hot water at every tap points upward. Either the high limit has tripped, which is the reset button behind the upper access panel, or the upper element has burned open. A high limit that trips again within a day is a symptom rather than the fault. Something is letting the water overshoot, usually a thermostat stuck closed or an element grounded to the shell, and pressing reset a second time buys a few hours and nothing more.

Elements get checked with a meter for continuity and for a short to ground, which takes minutes once power is off and the panels are open. Pulling one out of a tank carrying heavy scale means fighting a socket packed with hardened mineral, and that is where a quick job stretches into an hour.

Dip tubes deserve naming because their failure imitates something else entirely. The tube delivers incoming cold to the bottom of the vessel so it stays separated from the hot water riding at the top, which is the layer the outlet draws from. When the tube cracks or snaps off short, cold dumps in near the top and blends straight into the outlet, so the house gets lukewarm water at full pressure while the burner or the elements behave perfectly.

Drain valves are the other quiet one. Plastic bodies weep after a flush and will not reseat, and the answer is a brass replacement valve rather than more torque on the handle.
